"Glamorous" Story Updates 2: Graphic novel idea

I have always loved comic books and graphic novels.
Must be the same reason I love cartoons animated films!

Being a visual person, I have always enjoyed being transported to a new world though fantastical images.

There are many fantasy authors who have worked with artist to transform their books into graphic novels.

I am looking into doing the same with "Glamorous." So I checked in with KGPS, the designer of my book cover. He doesn't do illustrations, but he recommended that I reach out to a couple of illustrators on 99designs.com. I am following up on the idea with them.

Turns out that these are expensive to create, because of all the artwork involved, but I might have an idea on how to work that out!

And to date myself, here is one of the series I was interested in many years ago. Still have the full series on my bookshelf!

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 3: The Detour..."

What came next after those first 30 pages of "Glamorous?"

 

Remember that "Detour" I mentioned in the previous Story Idea post?

 

Back in 2012 when I had the dream and started writing the story, I had an idea to create a novella, or eventually a novel. I didn't know what that meant at the time, but I wanted to try something with the idea.

And that was about the time all those major life events happened.

 

Although they called it restructuring, it meant...

when we had already started...

but I was able to find...

And get us moved...

So needless to say, the writing was put on the back burner for a few months!

"Glamorous" Story Updates 1: Expanding the Story

I spent the long holiday weekend adding addition chapters to "Glamorous." I even took Friday off to have the additional day to write!

After talking with the beta readers about the "back story" for some of the major characters, I decided to include additional chapters to include that part of the story. 

I had originally thought to develop those parts of Grace's world in later books, but was convinced to bring them into her world in the first book. Here is what that meant for the weekend.

• Several off the original chapters had contained hints of the back story, so I pulled out those kernels and expanded on them. 
• Some of the back story was completely new. 
• Some of the original chapters had pieces that needed to be added or changed, but luckily no major rewrites.

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 2: What came next after the dream that started "Glamorous?"

What came next after the dream that started "Glamorous?"

 

Did I start writing down this first story right away?

Did I write down the idea for later?

 

No and No.

 

What I did was the following:

 

I knew I had a good idea.

 

But I was curious where this story would go.

 

So I took the time to sit and think about the story.

 

To try to figure out what was at stake, who was involved, and where the story wanted to go.

 

And I spent more time just thinking about the story.

 

And let my intuitive, creative side start to unravel the details...

...until I discovered Grace, Danny, The Glamour, and the others.

 

And then they started to tell the story themselves FOR me.

 

And then I started WRITING!

 

My first session writing I wrote 30 pages of a novella that would eventually evolve into "Glamorous" 

 

...but not before a slight detour...

"Glamorous" Cover Design Part 11: What I was looking for in my"Glamorous" Book Cover design...

What I was looking for in my"Glamorous" book cover design?

I was looking for several things for my book cover design.

(1) I wanted a cover that people would see on Amazon and go "Cool" or "Wow" and click on the image to read more about the book.

The cover is the first thing potential readers see. The first chance to "sell" the book and get them to want more.

(2) I wanted something that was unique and not like all the other covers in my genres of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Fantasy. 

You would be amazed at how many novels with strong heroines have them on the cover in Leather! And carrying swords! 
So that was a automatic disqualify-er for any design - putting Grace in leather.

(3) I wanted a cover that gave you an idea of the characters and the story.

(4) I wanted a cover that looked good no matter the size. 

There are several sizes of book covers on Amazon. 
Have you thought about that?

• The cover on the main book page.
• The cover when it is found in a search.
• The cover in the "readers also bought" section.

They range in size from big to almost too tiny to see anything!

I think this book cover is amazing and met all my requirements!

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 1: Where did the idea for "Glamorous" and the Grace Bishop Novels come from?

Where did the idea for "Glamorous" and the Grace Bishop Novels come from?

I've had several people ask me where I got the idea for "Glamorous."

I have been a sci-fi and fantasy reader my entire life
(Check out my pinterest site to see what I mean!)

So it is a "space" I am very happy living in.

About three years ago, I was living in ATL. I was down with one of my "usual" mid-winter colds.
You now when you are not feeling well enough to do anything, but also not feeling poorly enough to sleep?
I was in that in-between space when I had a "dream" that was the basis off what became "Glamorous" in full.

There was a private investigator (a man at that point in the story history)...

 Who drove a kick-ass convertible...

Who had a German shepherd side-kick...

Who was approached by a wealthy business man...

Who wanted to hire him to find his lost sister...

The PI learns that all the other people this man hired had not been able to find his sister, and in fact they had disappeared themselves.

The PI takes the case, finds out that the sister was lured to a location via email, thinking she was going for a modeling shoot.

Instead, she is transported to another dimension where ghoulish creatures are harvesting the body parts off young girls to keep themselves alive and pretty.

Oh yeah!!

This story very quickly evolved into the basic outline of "Glamorous" that became the story you see today.

• Private Investigator
• Missing girl(s)
• Person concerned for the girl(s) comes to the PI for help
• Strange people in an "alternate" place
• harvesting body parts for gruesome purpose
• PI must stop more girls from getting taken

You never know when inspiration will strike or how nurturing your ideas can lead to wonderful things.

"Glamorous" Cover Design Contest - Finalist selected, tweaking final designs

I have selected ...

... designers to be finalists for the contest.

I kicked of the "final round" last night. This round goes until Sunday and then I have two weeks to decide on the cover for my book Glamorous. 

I will be holding a poll to get feedback on the final 4 designs.

We are working to get those last round of designs tweaked.
I am having them try a few different things so I can compare versions of each design.
Change a face, change the darkness of the cover, change the position of a key element...

The designers have been very patient with me as I worked with them, making more and more changes, sometimes going back to a previous version to tweak it a different way when something I suggested didn't pan out.

I can't wait to see where we get to by Sunday night!
