"Glamorous" Story Updates 3: First Chapter featured in a podcast

"Glamorous" Story Updates 3: First Chapter featured in a podcast

I submitted the first pages of Glamorous to the Writership Podcast.

The episode of my book was published yesterday.

The podcast hostesses are two editors who will review any five pages from your book, published or manuscript, for free as part of their podcast series.

They provide a podcast where they read the submitted pages, discuss the pages together, and provide comments. They also provide "in line" notes on-line showing their editorial comments in line with the actual chapter.

You get to both hear the pages read out loud as well as read the chapter for each podcast.

It was a lot of fun to hear the review. Great stuff there for me to start working on throughout the book!

Their big questions were actually all answered or given insight to in the remaining pages of the chapter (see my comment on the podcast).

Happy listening and reading!

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 5: Transitioning to a Full Length Novel

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 5: Transitioning to a Full Length Novel

Working with my friend in our Novel Club got me inspired to turn my short story into a full length novel.

I had the title I liked from the very beginning, so that stuck with me throughout and is the name of my book "Glamorous."

First thing I did was go back through all the versions of the story I had (short story, novella, etc.) and put together the longest version of the story I could piece together. Not a recommended approach, by any means, but I didn't want to lose any of those good ideas!

Then I followed my friend's advice to read Blake Snyder's book
"Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need."

(More on this book and how this all works will be part of the "Story Process" blog series.)

And then I put together a story board of what I had in hand. Here is a picture of the story board on my wall in my writing space (a.k.a. dining room nook.)

Those of you with very good eyes will see that this board is actually my "marketing" board now. I took down the Glamorous story board to start working on the next phase of the process - publishing and marketing.

The red highlights show where the pieces of my short story/novella conglomerate actually fit into the structure of an overall full length novel.

Whoa! Lots off writing needed to be done!

So the thinking and musing about the plot and characters began in earnest!

"Glamorous" Story Idea Part 4: And then came the short story version of "Glamorous"

What came next after the detour?

I wasn't quite ready to jump in a start a whole novel.

But I thought I might be able to write a short story that I could be proud of and someone would want to publish.

In hindsight, given my visual nature

I should have known that my story would NOT make a good short story, and I would not be a good short story writer.

But at least I worked my way through some edits

to shorten things down from the original novella stage and bravely submitted to several magazines in my genre.

And waited patiently while the rejections rolled in...

But in the meantime, I was participating in a "novel" club with a friend who was writing a full length sci-fi novel.

That is what eventually got me to stop

pursuing the short story angle and get inspired to write my own novel!
