Denise Bossarte's "Glamorous" Novel - Story Process Part 1: "Save the Cat"

"Glamorous" Story Process Part 1: "Save the Cat"

It might sound strange to use a book writing about screenwriting as a guide for writing a novel.

But "Save the Cat" was actually a god send for me!

 Blake Snyder's book
"Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need."

Dave, my friend and author of the best selling Sci-Fi novel "The Gift," turned me on to this book.

The name comes from a scene at the beginning of a story/film where the main character does something that endears us to them and gets us interested in them as a character, e.g. saving the cat.

Blake's book walks through the elements of a great story/film and lays out what should happen and when in the story. It is the blueprint for a successful and entertaining story.

The story structure is in 4 "acts" and the main points of the story, the "beats," fall inside the acts.

The beats are listed below, with the time in a film when you should expect them to occur. For a book, you translate the minutes into pages based on how many total pages you are shooting for in the book.

1. Opening image (1)
2. Theme Stated (2)
3. Set-up (1-10)
4. Catalyst (12)
5. Debate (12-25)
6. Break into the second act (25)
7. B Story (30) - for the secondary plot
8. Fun and games (30-55)
9. Midpoint (55) - end of second act
10. Bad guys close in (55-75)
11. All is lost (75)
12. Dark Night of the Soul (75-85)
13, Break into the third act (85
14. Finale (85-110)
15. Final image (110)

My book "Glamorous" has all of the beats knocked out. I had them up on my story board front and center during the entire story development phase!

In a later post I will map them out for you. :)
